MARGAO: The Colva police on Wednesday arrested a 20-year-old resident of Majorda, Renzil Casmiro D’Costa, on charges of assaulting a policeman on duty.
Police sources said that PSI Xavier Fernandes, attached to the Colva police, was on patrolling duty on the Colva-Betalbatim road when he stopped a boy riding a motorcycle. As the boy appeared to be a minor, the cop asked for his driving licence.
As the boy failed to produce his license, Fernandes began issuing the challan for the offence.
The boy, meanwhile, called up his friends, including D’Costa, who rushed to the site. A heated argument ensued between D’Costa and Fernandes. In a fit of rage, D’Costa allegedly punched Fernandes on his nose, leaving him profusely bleeding.
While Fernandes was rushed to the hospital, D’Costa was arrested under Section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and Section 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code.
