To save time, MU to email copies of answer scripts to students who apply for re-evaluation

It is the students right to get the photocopy of the answer-sheet within a given time frame as per the high court guidelines.

With a view to improve the examination system and cut down time taken to send copies of exam answer-sheets, the Mumbai University has decided to email scanned copies of answer-sheets to students, who have applied for re-evaluation. University officials claimed that since the previous manual method took three to six months for students to get photocopies of answer-sheets, this method would ensure that they got the same within a week of applying for it.

Dinesh Bhonde, Controller of Examination (CoE), Mumbai University, said even though students applied for photocopies of their answer-sheets soon after the results were declared, they received it only after three months. “In the manual method, a copy of the original answer-sheet has to be made and then dispatched to colleges. It is a time consuming exercise and gets delayed inadvertently. Students suffer due to this and at times they end up appearing for reexaminations of the papers they had sought a photocopy of. The university has taken cognisance of the delay and decided to come up with a solution that will not only cut down the time taken to issue photocopies, but also reduce manual work,” said Bhonde.

Manasi Nirgude, a final-year engineering student, said, “Even though I did well in all my fourth-semester papers, I failed in one. I applied for a photocopy, but did not receive it till the fifth semester exams were over. As a result, I had to appear for the substitute exam for that subject. As I did well in the re-exam I did not bother to pursue for re-evaluation then.”

Senate member Sanjay Vairal said even though the university issued the photocopies by charging Rs 100 from students, there was no point in students being issued the same if they had to re-appear for the exams without knowing whether they had failed or if there was some mistake in the original assessment of the answer-sheet. “It is the students right to get the photocopy of the answer-sheet within a given time frame as per the high court guidelines. But till now it was being flouted,” said Vairal.

Bhonde added, “The system of emailing scanned copies was proposed after considering the problems faced by students. After applying for photocopies, students will not have to wait for long anymore. They will be sent the scanned copies of their answer-sheets through email. We have installed scanners for this purpose and it will not take more than a week for applications to be processed.”

Festive offer

Students can take printouts of the answer-sheets and get them assessed privately. If there are any discrepancies in marking, students can inform the examination section, who will re-assess the answer-sheets to verify the claims of students. An official said the process too would be done within a set time frame so that students get the corrected result within a fortnight. “At present, the new system has been implemented for engineering students. It will be available for law students with immediate effect,” said Bhonde.
