Two policemen arrested for bribery granted bail

The complainant was directed by Samant to Narlekar who allegedly demanded Rs 2 lakh, to not register the case.

A sessions court has granted bail to the two Khar policemen, Subhash Samant and Mahendra Narlekar, and a driver who were arrested by the Anti Corruption Bureau in an alleged bribe case earlier this month.

The lawyer representing Samant filed a bail application in the court which stated that the complainant has adverse antecedents against him in the past. “These facts manifest that the complainant can go to any extent of misusing police machinery by lodging false complaints, to extort money/property,” read the bail application.

Moreover, the defence lawyer, Mallika Ingle, contended that Samant had not received any complaint of “rape” and “it is the complainant who himself forwarded the complaint and the photographs to the policeman.”

Lawyer Ingle, further informed the court that the complaint was filed due to personal rivalry with a real estate agent Vicky Arora.

On July 31, the complainant claimed to have received a call from Samant who said that a gang-rape complaint has been filed against the complainant and Samant told him that the alleged rape victim demanded Rs 50 lakh to take back the case. The complainant was directed by Samant to Narlekar who allegedly demanded Rs 2 lakh, to not register the case.

Festive offer

According to the ACB, Samant informed the agency that after escaping, he took an auto to Western Express Highway and threw the cash and documents into a garbage heap below the Bandra and Mahim railway station bridge.

Advocate Shashikant Parab, arguing for Narlekar told the court that Samant was the main accused and Narlekar was not directly implicated in the case. The ACB, opposing the bail plea, told the court that they are yet to probe the truth of the “fake” gangrape complaint and recover the cash and documents, Samant took with himself. Samant got his bail on Tuesday, while Narlekar got his on Saturday. The driver, who has been shown as a courier, got his bail on Wednesday.
