Case Presentation

Josh is Nursing Director for Medical Surgical Services for a 350-bed community hospital with growing outpatient services. In a recent meeting with the hospital leadership team, the Vice President of Financial Operations, and the Chief Medical Officer review data on prolonged hospital stays and hospital readmissions. These patients, especially those who die during a hospitalization, have been identified as a significant financial burden.

The Chief of Nursing and Patient Care Services reports that the hospital will expand its palliative care services with the addition of 2 new palliative care physicians and a nurse practitioner. Josh, new to the organization, asks what efforts are in place or planned to help all staff, particularly nurses, improve palliative care.
