Dubai: Young Mohammad Walid is banking on his pedigree to make a winning debut at the ‘Reign of Champions’ MMA fight at the end of the month.

Walid, 21, who hails from Syria but has spent a major part of his life in Abu Dhabi, will be up against Vaughn ‘The Spawn’ Donayre from the Philippines when the nine-fight card is held at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DTWC) on August 29.

Walid comes from a family which is enthusiastic about the sport. His father owned a martial arts gym and his older brother Khalid is a professional mixed martial arts fighter as well. The Abu Dhabi lad is the current Dubai FC welterweight champion and he is now eager to test himself on a bigger platform by entering the One FC fold.

Walid has won all three fights that he has been involved in so far, giving him the confidence of a fourth triumph and a winning debut in MMA. “The plan is to go and have a good fight. I am entering the cage to win. In fact, I don’t know anything about losing,” Walid told Gulf News as he set out his plans for the big day.

“On August 29, I will still have a perfect record with four wins to my name. It may be in Round One or Round Two, but I am going to finish him [Donayre] off,” he promised.

For the past few weeks, the 21-year-old has been undergoing rigorous training at his base in Abu Dhabi with his brother keeping a close watch. His head coach Alex Paz, though always on the move, has been monitoring his protege while the Brazilian duo of Bitta Lima and Fabio Melo have been the perfect sparring partners for the promising fighter.

“I’m clear about one thing: I don’t want to lose, simply because I don’t know anything about losing. I may be young but I have a lot of fighting experience running through my blood, and this gives me a lot of confidence for August 29,” Walid said.

“I am a professional in all aspects, and my job is to just go there and knock him [Donayre] off,” he added.

One FC’s ‘Reign of Champions’ is set to be the biggest event in One FC history with three World Championship title belts on offer. Lightweight world champion Shinya Aoki, fighting for the Evolve Fight Team, will make his first title defence against veteran Kamal Shalorus, while featherweight world champion Koji Oishi will face Mongolian champion Narantungalag Jadambaa and welterweight world champion Nobutatsu Suzuki will meet undefeated wrestling superstar Ben Askren.
