The newcomers come in 1 TB to 4 TB and don't use their fans unless needed

Some companies that sell storage devices don't actually make the storage units themselves. At least, not always. They tend to use the drive created by specialists.

In this case, we're bringing you the I-O Data HDJA-UTW line of external hard drives, which happen to really be drive enclosures holding one WD Red HDD from Western Digital each.

Technically speaking, WD Red HDDs were made for NAS devices (network-attached storage), but they work just fine in other situations too.

Clearly, I-O Data thinks they can be excellent external USB storage devices. That's what the HDJA-UTW product line consists of after all.

There are four of them to be precise, bearing the names of HDJA-UT1.0W, HDJA-UT2.0W, HDJA-UT3.0W and HDJA-UT4.0W. In that order, they have prices of 1 TB, 2 TB, 3 TB and 4 TB, respectively.

All four get all the power they need from the USB 3.0 connection, even the one needed to run the 40 mm fan when things get hot enough (the fan stays idle if the drive isn't used and, thus, stays cool).

Each member of the I-O Data HDJA-UTW series of external storage devices measures 45 x 216 x 155 mm / 1.77 x 8.50 x 6.10 inches. Not very small, but still pretty nice considering the lack of external power bricks. Unfortunately, prices are still unknown.
