VARANASI: Stage is set for an interesting contest at the Kurmi-dominated Rohania assembly seat for which process of filing nomination by candidates for assembly by-election will start from Wednesday.
For this contest, except Samajwadi Party, Bharatiya Janata Party supported Apna Dal and Qaumi Ekta Dal, no other party has opened its card. After suffering a jolt in parliamentary election, SP is leaving no stone unturned to lose the battle during by-election.
Besides its own, the SP has put the prestige of UP minister Surendra Singh Patel at stake too by fielding his brother Mahendra Patel at Rohania seat for the by-election. Surendra Patel was the only SP candidate who had won the Sewapuri assembly seat out of eight assembly constituencies of Varanasi district during 2012 assembly election.
During the last assembly election, Apna Dal’s Anupriya Patel had won the Rohania seat by defeating Bahujan Samaj Party’s Ramakant Singh while SP and BJP stood at third and fourth, respectively. This seat became vacant after Anupriya contested parliamentary election from Mirzapur and defeated Surendra Patel. Since BJP seems to be supporting Anupriya’s mother Krishna Patel and Bahujan Samaj Party not giving any signal whether it will field its candidate or not, it is a foregone conclusion that the contest is going to take place between the families of Anupriya and Surendra Patel once again.
Of 3,64,519 voters, including 2,04,785 male and 1,59,716 female voters, people of Kurmi caste are dominant. For the same reason the Qaumi Ekta Dal of mafia don turned MLA Mukhtar Ansari is also relying on a candidate of the same caste. The Congress has also not opened its cards whether it will field a candidate on this seat.
On the other hand, the district election office finalised its preparations. According to ADM City M P Singh, nomination will take place at ADM (administration) court from Wednesday. After the end of nomination process on August 27, scrutiny of forms will take place on August 28. With the end of date of nomination withdrawal, the final list of candidates will be declared on August 30. Polling will take place at 340 booths on September 13.

He said about 24 points on the bordering areas of this assembly seat had been identified for sealing the polling date. The list of officials for magistrate duty has also been finalised, he added.
