Alleging police inaction, man moves HC seeking probe into daughter’s suicide

A businessman in Govandi has moved the Bombay High Court seeking a probe into the death of his  daughter who allegedly committed suicide over a love affair gone wrong.

40-year-old Chinmoy Chatterjee, who deals in old cars, just like actor Jiah Khan’s mother Rabya,is seeking justice for his daughter Priya, who allegedly died following a heartbreak. But while the probe into Jiah’s death, now taken over by the Central Bureau of Investigation, may examine the suicide or homicide angles, Chatterjee has not even succeeded in getting the police to lodge an FIR in the case.

According to Chatterjee’s petition filed through lawyer Siddique Mohammed Zaid, the 23-year-old appeared depressed and told her mother that the boy she was in love with, had refused to marry her.

Priya worked at a call centre and was home on February 8 as she had a day off. She told Anjali that she felt like eating paneer that day and asked her to get it from the market. When Anjali returned from the market, Priya did not open the door. Anjali looked inside from the window and saw Priya hanging from the ceiling fan. With the help of their neighbours, Anjali entered the house and rushed Priya to Rajawadi Hospital. She was declared dead on arrival.

Chatterjee, who was out of the city, came in the same night. The Shivaji Nagar police station, he stated, registered an accidental death report (ADR) in the case.
On many occasions after Priya’s death, Chatterji claimed, he tried to tell the police that Priya was in love with one Wilson, who had called her to meet him a day earlier at 7 pm in Vashi. According to Anjali, after coming home past midnight, Priya was crying and went to sleep without having dinner.

Festive offer

Chatterjee stated, that Priya’s friends were willing to come forward and give statements and photographs to show the relationship between Priya and Wilson but the police had not recorded their statements. Chatterjee suspected that Wilson had abetted Priya’s suicide and urged the police to take action against him.

The Shivaji Nagar police station, Chatterjee claimed, “failed and neglected to look into the matter seriously and instead made a mockery of the death of the daughter of the petitioner.”
