The central government will hold talks with chief ministers of Assam and Nagaland this week to discuss violence in Golaghat area of Assam where 15 persons were killed and more than 10,000 displaced. Assam CM Tarun Gogoi has blamed CRPF personnel for not taking action against attackers who allegedly came from Nagaland.
Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said the incident was a result of “tension between two groups over a small piece of land.” Following Assam CM’s request, Centre has mobilised ten additional companies of paramilitary personnel from within the state and deputed them in the Golaghat area.
“Earlier there were nine check posts, we have increased the number to 18 on the request of the state government. Getting forces from outside the state was a problem but we have mobilised them from Assam and deputed them at the site,” said a senior home ministry official.
Assam CM has rushed state chief secretary Jitesh Khosla to Delhi to oversee the mobilisation of troops.
The Ministry of Department for Development of North East Region has called for a meeting of the chief ministers of all the north-eastern states and sources said the home ministry wants to encash this opportunity to open the channel of communication between Assam and Nagaland CMs. To defuse the present situation, the two state representatives will be asked to hold talks and resolve the issue amicably, said the home ministry official.
