Akvarious Productions’ latest offering, Bombed, explores the changing demographics of urban India.
Set in Mumbai, Bombed tells the story of Zameer, known as Zed, a happy-go-lucky youngster, who likes to smoke pot and play on his PS3.
He whiles away his time playing cards with his eccentric, short-tempered landlady Fiona and discussing popular culture with his neighbour Yogi, a struggling actor from Bihar. Zed’s lacklustre life takes a sudden turn when Inspector Sudarshan Damle lands up at his doorstep to interrogate him about terror attacks and his family’s past.
Fiona and Yogi stand by Zed. The play, is a light-hearted look at the urban youth. Written by Asha Duggal and Bobby Nagra, Bombed is directed by Adhaar Khurana.
“We have always focused on comedies,” says Akarsh Khurana, the producer of the play. “But our plays aren’t meaningless. We don’t like to make our plays preachy either. Bombed pans out like a comedy for the most part while highlighting important issues, such as mistrust between communities. We have also explored how Mumbai is changing. The suburbs of Mumbai still have a nice old-world-charm about it. But, overall, technology has made things so impersonal.”
The characters will resonate with the audience, adds Akarsh. “The themes in the play are universal. Youth in any city knows what it is like to live away from home and confront issues of identity.”
Akvarious Productions has staged about 45 plays including quite a few in Bangalore such as The Interview , The Ugly One , Internal Affairs and Rafta Rafta . Bombed will be staged in Jagriti Theatre, Whitefield, from today till August 24. The shows are at 8 pm, except on Sunday, when it is at 3pm and 6.30 pm. Tickets are priced at Rs. 250 and are available on bookmyshow.com and at the venue.
