KANPUR: A Kanpur court on Monday awarded 10 years' imprisonment to a deputy superintendent of police for abducting and raping a minor girl. The SC/ST Act court also imposed a fine of Rs 65,000 on the officer, Amarjeet Shahi. Judge Sriprakash ordered that Rs 50,000 from the amount be spent on the rehabilitation of the rape survivor.
The court had held Shahi guilty of the offences last Thursday.

The girl's father had alleged the DSP was known to the family and would often visit their house. According to the prosecution, on November 2, 2010, Shahi went to the survivor's house and asked for tea and snacks. When the girl went inside to fetch snacks, he put some intoxicant into her tea. She fell unconscious after consuming the spiked tea. Shahi is then said to have physically abused the girl and made a video-recording that he later used to blackmail her.
The prosecution claimed Shahi used to call the girl to various places and even took her to Pratapgarh, where he was posted at that time.
On March 13, 2012, Shahi went to the girl's house and forced her to go along with him. In desperation, the girl consumed a pesticide and fell unconscious. She had to be taken to hospital for treatment. The prosecution claimed Shahi forcibly took the girl to the Cantonment police station the same night and got an FIR lodged on her behalf, accusing her father and one Shrawan Kumar of physical exploitation.
According to the prosecution, the first FIR in the case was lodged two years ago by the survivor's father. He lodged a complaint with the IG, Kanpur Zone, who ordered a probe into the allegations. The probe was handed over to a deputy inspector general of police. After the probe found Shahi prime facie guilty, the police registered a case against him in March 2012 and arrested him.
