The Gauteng department of health yesterday said patients using public health facilities must not pay consultation fees for eye care services.

The Times earlier reported that some health care facilities charged a "consultation fee" of between R50 and R100.

Department spokesman Prince Hamnca yesterday said: "All patients who receive eye care examinations in our public health care facilities that provide eye care services are not charged a consultation fee."
