GUWAHATI: Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) activists gheraoed the Nagaland House in Guwahati on Monday in protest against attacks on Assamese villagers by Naga miscreants at Uriamghat in Golaghat district.
The peasants’ organization accused the Nagaland government of failing to stop the Naga miscreants from killing the villagers and torching houses along the Assam-Nagaland border.
“If the attack on Assamese villagers is unabated, we will be forced to clamp an economic blockade against Nagaland. The state must restore the status quo along the inter-state border,” said KMSS president Akhil Gogoi. Security personnel cordoned off the Nagaland House to stop KMSS activists from entering the house.
KMSS has sent a memorandum to Nagaland chief minister TR Zeliang, urging him to intervene and resolve the border flare up. KMSS urged the Nagaland government to help in the resettlement of the affected people in Uriamghat. “Take immediate action to prevent future atrocities and encroachment in the border areas,” the memorandum said. KMSS also appealed to Zeliang to take action in rescuing the two abducted students missing since July 26.
On the other hand, All Adivasi Student Association of Assam (Aasaa) on Monday staged a dharna at Dispur Last Gate, seeking urgent measures to protect life and property of Assamese people living in the border areas. “The state government has failed to protect the Assamese people. People are being killed, many are still missing and more than 1,100 houses have been burnt down,” said Raphael Kujur, Aasa president.
