KARACHI: Justice (retd) Sair Ali, who oversaw the elections of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman’s post as chief election commissioner, has backtracked on his previous stance of leaving the board once the elections are over.

Sair is now adamant that he wants to continue working in the PCB as the chief election commissioner and oversee the elections of regions as well, while additionally demanding a salary of over Rs1 million.

Sair was appointed by the government when the Supreme Court (SC) had ordered fresh elections.

The Express Tribune has learnt that Sair has asked for a contract similar to those of team management officials such as head coach Waqar Younis.

It should be mentioned here that Waqar is being paid Rs1.6 million per month, which is a similar salary given to former coach Dav Whatmore.

“The PCB’s top hierarchy is shocked at the demands of Sair, because no one was expecting that he will demand salary of over a million,” an official having knowledge of the matter confirmed.

“Earlier, Sair had said that he is not keen to continue, but now his U-turn is a revelation for everyone and even the government has balked at his demands.”

The PCB was originally paying Rs200,000 to the election commissioner, and Sair’s demands have caused a great stir as the board seems averse to dole out huge sums to an official whose impact on Pakistan cricket is negligible.

Efforts were made to contact Sair but he could not be reached for comments.
