Uruguay's top football teams Penarol and Nacional began the 2014-2015 season with decisive wins against their respective rivals.

Penarol defeated Cerro 3-0, while Nacional beat Defensor Sporting 5-2 over the weekend, as part of the initial match day of the national Opening Tournament.

Reigning champion Danubio, meanwhile, suffered a major setback after losing 4-2 to Racing in the final 18 minutes of the game, and second-placed team Wanderers also faltered, losing 2-1 to El Tanque.

Penarol's seasoned team captain Antonio Pacheco scored two goals and Jorge Rodriguez scored a third to cinch the clear victory in Saturday's game.

"We shouldn't get carried away after having had a good win against a good team," coach Jorge Fossatti said, calling for " humility" in the face of Wednesday's match against Bolivia's Wilstermann, as part of the Copa Sudamericana (South American Cup).

In Nacional's win Sunday against the runner-ups of the last Libertadores Cup, Defensor Sporting, the man of the hour was Ivan Alonso, who scored an amazing four goals with Sebastian Fernandez scoring the fifth.

Nacional coach Alvaro Gutierrez said, "I hadn't expected such a victory, I had expected a very tough match, because Defensor has a great team, they proved it at the Libertadores Cup."

The champions of the 2014-2015 season will be crowned following a series of final games between the winner of the Opening and Closing tournaments, and the annual scoreboard, which adds up the scores from both events. Endite
