Bollywood’s parliamentarians may not have it easy anymore. Contrary to media reports that the BJP has asked its actor MPs to “go easy on the usual Bollywood lifestyle” — the guidelines also include saying no to live shows and sex comedies — the party has denied it.
However, there are actors who believe that an ‘unwritten code of conduct’ must nevertheless be followed.

Shatrughan Sinha, the Lok Sabha MP from Patna, says, “If actors are passionate about doing naach gaana, they should continue living that life; why contest elections and enter Parliament?” He adds, “It is okay to take up acting or do live shows once in a while, but it should not be done on a regular basis, because now, we are public figures in true sense.”

He continues, “After seven years as a public servant, I have earned immense respect from society. Today, nobody asks me to mouth dialogues from my films like Kalicharan and Vishwanath. I get many film and television offers, but I chose to host just one TV show on desh bhakti.”
But Hema Malini, who represents Mathura and is a regular with live performances, says she can do justice to both. She admits that she has to give priority to her responsibilities as an MP, but maintains that she “can’t not dance”. She explains, “We are in Parliament because
of our popularity as actors. I spread Indian tradition and culture through my dance performances. I will take up select films, as people want to see me on screen. It is all about time management. Will elected doctors and lawyers stop practising?”
