Gulzar saab's words are magical. Ethreal poetry and Gulzar are synonyms. Be it his writing or direction, Gulzar saab presented a different side to every emotion, and brought new meaning to every situation. He can say very convoluted things in simple words and can make simple inscrutable. It's up to you, what you like. Today on his 80th birthday, we bring you some of his best songs in Bollywood...

1. Mora Gora Ang Lai Le (Bandini)

A beautiful rendition of love between Radha and Krishna and she wants to be like her paramour. This is also his first song on Hindi films.

2. Aye Zindagee Gale Laga Le (Sadma)

We know Gulzar from his work, and what song can describe his philosophy in life than this ultimate number?

3. Tere Bina Zindagi se Koi (Aandhi)

Gulzar and RD Burman. Should we say more? Listen to the song, and you will know what how music and words complement each other.

4. Aanewala Pal Janewala hai (Golmaal)

Live in today, love this moment. Who can teach us this better than this song?

5 Humne Dekhi Hai (Khamoshi)

It would be unfair to other songs in this film if we only mention the above number. Be it Tum Pukar Lo or Wo Shaam, Khamoshi got its soul from its songs. However, when the song was much criticised because of its lyrics as who can see 'ankhon ki mehekti khusbu'? But his fans would understand, won't we?

6. Tujhse Naaraz Nahin Zindagi (Masoom)

Gulzar makes us realise the pain of a woman who has been cheated by her husband but is also aware that his illegitimate son should not bear the burden of his father's infidelity. Kudos to the magical words. And who can forget Lakdi Ki Kathi? We have all grown singing that song!

7. Musafir Hoon Yaro (Parichay)

It's a personal favourite, though another song (Beeti Na Beetayi Raina) from the same movie won an award. The film, an adaptation of Hollywood movie Song of Music, was directed by Gulzar saah. The song also reminds of Raah pe Rehte Hain by Namkeen.

8. Mera Kuch Samaan (Ijazat)

Pancham may have thought the lyrics as a news item when Gulzar showed him the song, but after it was composed, and sung by Asha Bhosle, it went on to become one of the best music numbers of this trinity.

9. Khali Haath Shaam Aayee (Dil Padosi Hai)

Another magical number by Pancham, Gulzar and Asha, the voice is as haunting and lonely as the lyrics and music.

10. Naino Ki Mat Maniyo (Omkara)

Gulzar has been always in touch with his fans, he knows what people of every generation would like to hear. But that doesn't mean he would compromise with quality. He is still writing for us, and we pray to God that he continue to do so forever!
