Competitions mark Krishna Janmashtami celebrations in Mangalore

From Bollywood numbers to devotional songs, hundreds of children enacted scenes from Lord Krishna’s life during the Krishna Janmashtami observed here on Sunday.

The largest of the crowds was at Kadri Manjunatha Temple where thousands gathered to take part in the festivities. The cynosure of all eyes was the ‘Krishna Vesha’ competition for children, where hundreds took to the stage, dressed in a variety of beads, a flute in hand and a faux-gold crown.

Applause

To the polite applauses of the audience, the children enacted heroic scenes from the fables of Lord Krishna, his dances with the gopikas. For the adults, there was the competition of sustaining the longest conch blow. In other stages, dances and devotional songs kept the devotees enthralled through the day.

At T.M.A. Pai Convention Centre, Hare Krishna Temple organised a series of activities including Krishna Vesha competitions for children above three years, Gita Slokas recitation and painting competitions for those above five years, and even a quiz on the Bhagavad Gita. For the adults, devotional music, bhajans, darshans and pujas marked the day.

Deliberation

With a programme deliberating on the ‘eighth avatar of Vishnu’, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness started their festivities in a packed hall in Mannagudda with a discussion on the ‘Higher dimension of intelligence: intelligence quotient, emotional quotient and spiritual quotient’. Winding up at 10.30 p.m., the celebrations saw numerous pujas and rituals and even a devotional music concert by vocalist Vidyabhushana.
