Gili Trawangan Welcomes Independence Day by Cleaning Up Trashes

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In welcoming the 69th Indonesian Independence Day, as many as 500 people in Gili Trawangan, including students, hotel and restaurant employees, and foreign tourists were participating to clean up the touristic area yesterday.
“The activity is to pick up trashes and plastics,” said Gili Eco Trust Coordinator Delphine Robbe.
According to Delphine, she could collect two buckets full of trashes from around her residency in three hours.
“Mostly plastic wastes,” said the Frenchwoman yesterday.
Gili Trawangan is the favorite touristic island in Lombok, especially for foreign tourists. There are 25 diving spots around Gili Matra including the popular Sunset Point and Shark Point on the west, also Trawangan and Haliks on the north.
“There are lots of fishes and corals here,” said Delphine who has been staying in Gili Trawangan for 10 years to restore corals.
Gili Trawangan village chief Lukmas said that the cleaning up events is held every year to welcome the Independence Day.
