A life transformed

When Mohan (17) was first introduced to the rehabilitation centre run by CHETNA at Nizamuddin Basti, he was just 10 years old; a shabby looking boy who was addicted to whitener ink for inhalation. In his own words, his family hated him and wanted to disown him. But due to the sustained efforts of volunteers at the rehabilitation centre and his own will power, Mohan is completely transformed now.

He now spends most of his day time studying, learning dance and other skills. Dressed smartly, he welcomes visitors to the centre with a smile. Talking to The Hindu , Mohan said: “This centre has completely transformed my life. Some years ago, I was badly addicted and used to inhale whitener ink and whatever came my way. Everyone hated me and kept calling me names. But the counselling here made me leave all that. Now when I look back, I feel bad that I wasted so much time. I could have done something useful with my life.”

“I love to dance…after completing my studies for the day, I learn dance along with my other friends at the centre,” said Mohan.

Mohan now wishes to get a respectable life once he grows up. He appealed to the government to provide aid to children like him, who need to be freed from substance abuse.
