This loud Jaguar racer still goes on Sunday drives

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – One of the earliest Jaguars, a 1937 SS100 Roadster, still can be seen on the roads of southern California. Remember to look on Sundays.

Owner Jeff Lotman of Los Angeles was displaying the car at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance as one of six cars in the pre-World War II racing class. A sleek, black open-top two-seater, the car was designed by William Lyons, who founded the company that became Jaguar.

The car was altered for British racing. Frame members drilled for lighter weight are on clear display, along with a wrapped leaf suspension and a long exposed side exhaust. The 2.5-liter motor produces almost 20 horsepower, Lotman says.

The car had five owners before Lotman bought it, already restored and documented. The car ran in 30 races in the U.K. and won 12 times, and Lotman even managed to find and purchase the trophies it won.

While it's a highly collectible car, Lotman likes to take the car out for Sunday drives with his kids.

"It's so loud, we see how many car alarms we can set off,'' he laugh
