KARACHI:

The Jamaat-e-Islami Gaza Million March rally caused traffic to come to a virtual standstill on Sharae Faisal and its link roads on Sunday.

Even though traffic is usually light on Sundays, vehicles heading towards the airport, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Shah Faisal Colony, Rashid Minhas Road, Karsaz Road and Baloch Colony were affected by the rally.

“We cannot afford to have Sharae Faisal closed for even a minute, because it then starts to affect the traffic flow of the entire city and causes traffic jams all over,” said an official of the traffic police control room who did not want to be named. “We try our level best to keep it open no matter what, but sometimes that is not possible.”

The traffic police diverted traffic coming from the airport and Malir to the Shah Faisal Colony Bridge, from where motorists were forced to go through the Korangi Industrial Area in order to reach their destinations. Meanwhile, those going towards the airport were diverted to the Korangi Road from the FTC Bridge. The official added that traffic was blocked on both sides of the road from the Finance and Trade Centre to Karsaz, and that it was only after the rally ended at 8pm that traffic flow was resumed.
