Keri: The women in the village of Surla in Sattari today staged the rasta roko to voice their concerns against misbehaviour of the picnickers visiting the area during the monsoon season and urged the government to take the steps for establishing discipline and decorum.
August 15, on the eve of Independence Day, Surla had attracted huge crowd of picnickers who made it uneasy for the local women to move out by misbehaviour and rudeness.
Only after the promise made by the Police Inspector of Sattari, Sanjiv Dalvi to restore peace and order in Surla in a meeting held in Sateri Kelbai temple hall finally women allowed the road open for traffic.
Taramati Gaonkar, a local woman told, “The picnickers under the influence of alcohol during the holidays make it difficult for us to move freely in our village. Life of women is unsafe and we are fade up due to their misbehaviour and misconduct. From morning till late evening our narrow road is almost congested by the vehicles of the picnickers, who hardly observe any rules.”
Ashwini Gaonkar, another woman said, “Three children from our village were injured badly by rough driving of picnickers. Lack of toilets in bars, force the picnickers to urinate openly. It is irritating to see their misbehaviour. Traffic congestion is a regular problem.”
Surla having the population of less than 300 has seven bars. Picnickers were coming in a large number from the border areas of Maharashtra and Karnataka, instead of enjoying natural beauty of village, prefer to drink and dance in indecent manner.
Archana Gaonkar says, “Eve-teasing problem is not new for our school going girl children. They are mentally harassed by the picnickers. We want to free our village from these indecent picnickers.”
Meanwhile, the deputy collector of Bicholim, Biju Naik have organised meeting in her chamber to discuss about the problem alongwith the villagers, Bar owners, and panch and sarpanch of Dongurli-Thane on Aug. 22 at 11.a.m.
