The next time you come across an overflowing drain, leaking water pipeline or other civic issues, just click a picture and post it, along with the grievance, on Facebook and it will be addressed at the earliest. This is what the Nellore district administration has promised. With an aim of speedy disposal of the day-to-day civic complaints and making the government-public interface more credible, the authorities have taken the social media route this time.

Nellore Mayor Abdul Aziz has recently launched a Facebook account and appealed the citizens to post their grievances pertaining to civic amenities, along with photographs of the facilities that need immediate attention.

“There is no need for drafting a complaint and submit it to the authorities. Just click a picture and upload it in our Facebook account. Immediate action will be taken to redress the grievances,” says Mr. Aziz, adding that civic complaints can also be forwarded to a dedicated e-mail account: mayornellore@gmail.com.

These initiatives have been introduced to involve the youth and educated sections actively in the process of improving civic amenities in the city. So far, only the elderly people, senior citizens and local residential welfare associations are enthusiastically coming forward in such matters, he says

In a fast response to this facility, many students have already posted about the civic issues in their localities, with garbage disposal topping the bill. Anil Reddy Iska, a resident of Pogathota locality near Gandhibomma Centre, appealed to the Mayor to visit their area and take steps for immediate garbage disposal. Pogathota is home to most hospitals, nursing homes, hotels and commercial complexes in the city. The residents make a plea for systematic garbage disposal system to ensure cleanliness and hygiene. Nithin, a resident of Haranadhapuram, highlighted the need of a road in front of the Narayana Engineering College. Lack of proper road and drainage system were causing lot of problems for the residents there, he said in his complaint.
