District round up: Udupi

Inaugurated: “Students should give up the fear of failure,” said Shashikant Prabhu, Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science Engineering at Manipal Institute of Technology. He was speaking after inaugurating the students’ council of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) College in Udupi recently.

Prof. Prabhu said that instead of fearing teachers, examinations and failure, students should share their thoughts with their parents. Convincing parents was equal to convincing the society. Besides degrees, it was essential that students developed soft skills which would help them get employed, he said.

Kusuma Kamath, Principal of MGM College, U. Leelavati, Student Welfare Officer, S.R. Shet, Head of the Department of Hindi, and Sandhya Nambiar, Head of the Department of English, were present.

Bharat Nayak, President of the Students’ Council, welcomed the gathering. Sharanya, Secretary, proposed a vote of thanks.

Training: The SMV Institute of Technology and Management (SMVITM) organised a week-long training programme on “Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) Design” for final year engineering students at Bantakal in Udupi district, recently.

Rathnamala Rao, Professor of Electronics and Communications Engineering at NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte, inaugurated the programme.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Rao said that there were many job opportunities for electronics engineers in the field of VLSI, provided they are trained in the Verification and Testing aspects of VLSI circuits using CAD tools. She commended the institute for providing training to the students in this core area and preparing them for the challenge.

Raghukrishna S. of Contemporary Verification Consultancy Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore, who imparted the training to the students, said that there was a shortage of VLSI Verification professionals in the country. Hence there was a bright future for VLSI trained students passing out of engineering colleges. Radhakrishna S. Aithal, Principal of SMVITM, A. Ganesha, Dean (Academics), and Balachandra Achar H.V., Head of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, were present.

Released: The “Miracles” magazine brought out by the Literary Association of Milagres College was released at Kallianpur near Udupi recently.

Releasing the magazine, Paul Lobo, Headmaster of Milagres High School, said that a magazine reflected the institution and its academic culture. He lauded the contents and layout of the magazine. Nery Cornelio, Principal of Milagres College, presided over the function. Cyril Mathias spoke about the magazine and its theme. Laxmikanth welcomed the gathering. Dakshayani proposed a vote of thanks.
