GURGAON: As the work at the Chandhu Budhera water treatment plant (WTP) is nearing completion, HUDA officials say that they are planning to connect it with the Basai WTP to continue water supply to the city in case of any disruption in the main Gurgaon water supply (GWS) channel.
According to a senior HUDA official, Rs 21crore has been allotted for the project that will connect the 6.5 km long stretch between WTP units at Basai and Chandu Budhera.

"Water to the Basai WTP is sourced from Sonepat via GWS channel, which is now over 20 years old, and has seen a drop in the volume of water being supplied over the years. In 2009, the channel got damaged and water supply was disrupted in the city," he said.
The official added: "The Basai plant supplies water to HUDA's zone 1 and 2 and other MCG areas. Whereas, the newly constructed NCR water channel, coming through the Chandhu Budhera WTP, supplies water only to zone 3. The newly constructed channels are made of concrete and can be relied upon for uninterrupted supply."
However, HUDA official Subhash Piplani, in charge of the Basai WTP, said that water at both the treatment plants was treated and stored in tanks from where it's boosted further.
"The tanks have a capacity to hold 600 million gallons of water and only 60 MGD is supplied to the city each day. So once these tanks are connected, we can still continue supply to supply 60 MGD water for 10 days if water supply is disrupted," he said, adding the budget estimate has been sent to senior officials for approval and the project will be completed within eight months.
