The first comprehensive culinary history of Telugus ‘Aharavedam’ written by leader of Telugu Movement leader and president of Krishna District Writers’ Association G.V. Purnachand was released by Supreme Court Judge Jasti Chalameswar here on Saturday.
By maintaining control over the mouth, happiness could be achieved, Justice Chalameswar said, quoting an adage. Controlling the quantity and quality of food was essential for the well being of a person. People can be happy by carefully choosing the words they speak, he said. Those who follow the guidelines written in the book would lead a healthy life, he said.Deputy Speaker Mandali Buddha Prasad said that ‘Aharavedam’ was the first comprehensive culinary history of the Telugus.
He complimented Mr. Purnachand, an Ayurvedic physician, for the extensive research he did for writing the book. The Telugus had a great culinary tradition that was slowly getting lost. Several of the dishes described by Srikrishnadevaraya in his ‘Amuktamalyada’ have been lost.Mr. Buddha Prasad said the book revealed that the word ‘Annam’ originated from Telugu language. Most South Indian languages used the language today. He said it was more like a treatise then just a history book.
A.P. Hindi Academy chairman Yarlagadda Lakhsmi Prasad, who presided over the function, said that poet Srinadhudu also listed a menu card of 75 dishes the recipes of some of which were already lost. The speakers lauded the editor and publisher of ‘Mana Arogyam’magazine V.L. Narsareddy for publishing the 600-page book.
