An eleven-month-old girl died in a road accident on Poonamallee High Road while on her way back home along with her parents. The family had gone shopping for clothes for her birthday which falls on Sunday.

The accident took place around 5.30 p.m. on Friday near Mettukulam in Koyambedu. The child, identified as Pratyusha Janakiraman, was seated with her mother Prema on a motorcycle which her father Janakiraman was riding. The couple’s son Seshan (5) was sitting on the front portion of the vehicle.

As Sunday was to be Pratyusha’s first birthday, the family had gone to T Nagar to purchase clothes for the celebrations. They were returning to their home in Vanagaram.

“The accident occurred when a government bus going to Vandavasi from Koyambedu rammed into the motorcycle throwing the entire family on the road. While the other three escaped, Pratyusha came under the wheels of the bus and died on the spot,” said an investigating officer attached to the Koyambedu traffic investigations.

The driver of the bus, Sundarraj (54) of Vandavasi, was arrested by traffic police.

The infant’s body was sent to the Government Kilpauk hospital and handed over to her parents on Saturday morning, police sources added.
