With the Tamil month of Aadi ending temple used loudspeakers

Chennai: Residents of Karunanidhi Salai in Vyasarpadi held a road roko after officials from the Department of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) objected to the use of loudspeakers at the temple festival in the area on Saturday.
With the Tamil month of Aadi ending on Saturday, the temple authorities of the Karumariamman Koil in the locality played devotional songs, using loudspeakers. When the official objected, the local residents resorted to a road roko whereupon the Vyasarpadi police pacified the agitators.
Dr Mohan Kameswaran of the Madras ENT Research Foundation said, “The Supreme Court has said that the highest decibel for humans to hear is 110, but the loudspeakers used in temple festivals and public meetings would be between 120-130 decibels.”
He said using loudspeakers would affect the hair cells in the inner ear, which help in hearing. If these got damaged, they could not be replaced or repaired and the person would stay deaf for the rest of the life.
