PMK wants VCK conference banned

August 17, 2014 02:28 am | Updated April 21, 2016 03:58 am IST - SALEM:

The PMK has demanded a ban on a conference planned by the VCK in the city for Sunday, alleging that the Dalit party has planned to attack Vanniyars and members of other communities.

In a petition submitted to the Superintendent of Police on Saturday, PMK youth wing secretary R. Arul said the conference was to be held at Nalikalpatti, around which Vanniyars lived in large numbers. And the venue came under the Mallur police station limits, where many cases of caste violence had been reported.

The PMK alleged that VCK workers were extracting money from businessmen for the conference.

Vehicles banned

Meanwhile, Collector K. Maharabushanam has issued an order under Section 144 (1) (3) of the Criminal Procedure Code, banning the entry of hired vehicles into the district from 6 p.m. August 16 to 6 a.m. August 18.

VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan said the PMK’s demand went against the Madras High Court’s order that allowed the party to conduct the conference.

Police guidelines

The district police have issued guidelines for the conduct of the conference between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m.

After the police denied permission, the organisers moved the High Court, which allowed the conference, subject to the conditions set by the police.
