R. Ashwin believed that with the pitch easing a bit under the sun, India will give a better account in its second innings here in the final Test.

“Everybody has a bad day, it has happened. We were saying how the pitch has become better and how we can bat better in the second innings.

“We were trying to feed off positively and hopefully we will give one solid effort before the series ends,” he said here on Saturday.

The off-spinner, who wrested back his primary spinner role in this match, was happy with the way he bowled.

“I have worked on my action a bit more, looking to get more side-on and try and stay as balanced as possible. I try to be the best possible cricketer I can. I got a good spell today.

“I came back in the lunch break, took some feedback, the speeds I bowled and the best way to cope out there,” he said.

Praise for Aaron

Ashwin also praised Varun Aaron’s consistent speed. “He will come charging in and bowl quick, bowled close to 90 all the way,” Ashwin said.

As for catches in the slips, he added: “Confidence is the keyword here, as you catch more and more, you get confident, when you drop one you feel horrible. (Murali) Vijay put one down and then he caught one and he was so happy, that he almost wanted to throw the ball up.”

Meanwhile Gary Ballance said that Joe Root did a commendable job in putting England ahead.

“Aaron bowled well, Ashwin bowled well but the way Root counter-attacked was brilliant and that really put us in a strong position,” Ballance said.
