Late birdie secures Malaysian amateur victory for Pimnipa

Pimnipa Panthong won a wire-to-wire victory at the 31st Malaysian Ladies Amateur Open on Thursday.

The 16-year-old Thai posted an even-par 72 in the final round at Sungai Long Golf and Country Club to claim the title on six-under 210 at the 54-hole tournament.

A stroke behind in second place was compatriot Chayanit Wangmahaporn who made a 70 for a 211.

Both Pimnipa and Chayanit were on level terms after 16 holes but Pimpipa led for good with a birdie at 17th.

Another Thai Ornicha Konsunthea (70) finished on 216.

Nakhon Sawan-born Pimnipa became the second Thai to have landed the title after Sutheera Chanachai in 2003.

Thailand also won the team event on 278 with India coming in second on 301.

Pimnipa, Ornicha and Chayanit are among seven players who are in a training programme run by the Thailand Ladies Golf Association.

In another development, Thailand will host the 24th Thailand Ladies Amateur Open at Green Valley Country Club from Oct 29-31.

The winner will receive HM Queen Rambhai Barni's Trophy.
