NEW DELHI: Maoists exploded a landmine and fired indiscriminately along the route of CRPF IG Chhattisgarh's convoy travelling to remote Tadmetla in Chhattisgarh's Sukma to hoist the national flag on Friday. Two CRPF jawans suffered life-threatening injuries. Due to bad weather and unavailability of Dhruv choppers, it took about 10 hours to shift them to Raipur for treatment.
"After the CRPF opened effective retaliatory fire, Maoists retreated. Despite this, CRPF hoisted the national flag at Tadmetla and held a medical camp for villagers there," said CRPF IG (operations) Zulfiquar Hasan.
Tadmetla, about 500 km from Raipur, is where Maoists killed 75 CRPF men in April 2010. For the first time ever, the CRPF hoisted the national flag at Tadmetla in 2013 to signal their area domination.
Incidentally, the CRPF bagged 71 gallantry medals, highest among central police forces awarded on 68th I-Day. Of the 71 medals, the CRPF got 52 medals for acts of courage while combating Maoists.
