The residents and shop owners of JJ Marg have a nasty problem on their hands. The area is rampant with junkies and drug dealers often found huddled in between parked cars and under bridges. Not only do they use these spots to openly consume drugs, they also steal car parts and even carry knives.

Tired of shooing them away, many residents approached the police. However, the very next day, the shop keepers had to bear the consequences with the junkies flinging faeces at their shutters.

Fed up residents say they have complained to the JJ Marg police many times, but nothing has been done. In fact, they have alleged that a car that caught fire in the area on Wednesday night, which the police said was due to a short circuit, was also the work of the drug addicts. The police however insist that they are keeping the problem in check by patrolling the area frequently and have registered 162 cases against junkies this year.

Shop owner Mohsin Haveliwala said, "These drug addicts sit on the bus stop in front of my shop. They are a big nuisance. They even keep blades and threaten the police that they will cut their wrists. The police do arrest them, but when they are released they come back and stay under the bridge."

A shop owner said, "Once I complained to the police and the very next day these drug addicts dirtied my shutters with faeces. I don't know how they come to know who complained against them, but we face their wrath later."

Several residents said they feel unsafe due to their presence. "They sometimes steal logos, mirrors of vehicles parked below the bridge. We feel unsafe to send woman downstairs since these drug addicts are roaming around below the bridge. I am going to write to the police commissioner to do something about this. We suspect that they were the ones who set that car on fire on Wednesday," said Shabbir Dalal, a resident of JJ Marg.

However, inspector Udhavrao Karande, in charge of JJ Marg police station, said, "We never received any complaint from the residents against drug addicts. Our officers often catch these junkies consuming drugs in the open. We have till now registered 162 cases against them."
