NPA gunmen strafe mining firm vehicle in South Cotabato – report

Suspected New People's Army gunmen strafed a Sagittarius Mines Inc. (SMI) security vehicle in Tampakan town, South Cotabato Friday afternoon, Mindanao news site MindaNews reported.

According to Tampakan police chief, Senior Inspector Sherwin Maglana, no one was reported hurt in the shooting, even though the vehicle had eight people in it.

Maglana explained that the shot at vehicle belonged to Catena Security Inc., an affiliate of UK-based Group Four Securicor or G4S, which was providing SMI security services.

SMI spokesperson Manolo Labor confirmed the strafing, saying the vehicle was transporting Catena personnel.

The NPA had warned that it would attack the company if it continued its mining project.

In 2008, the NPA burned an SMI base camp in Barangay Tablu in Tampakan, damaging some P12 million in property. In May, the NPA burned another SMI base camp, this time in Barangay Kimlawis in Kiblawan, Davao del Sur. — Joel Locsin/DVM, GMA News
