Jorhat/Guwahati: Activists of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) and several other organizations imposed an indefinite economic blockade against Nagaland in Golaghat district for the second consecutive day on Thursday in protest against the killing of Assamese villagers by armed Nagas.
The blockade by Assamese organizations was imposed on NH-39 at Rongajan, about 60 km from the border.

Over 500 trucks and oil tankers bound for Nagaland were stranded on the highway due to the blockade. The organizations said the blockade against Nagaland will continue till Naga encroachers vacate the lands belonging to Assamese villagers.
AJYCP organizing secretary Jitul Rajkhowa said, “We, along with the student organizations of Tai Ahom, Schedule Caste, tea tribe and adivasis, are carrying out the blockade. We demand the government to ensure the protection of life and property of people living in border areas and deploy Assam Police battalions.” Tension prevails in Golaghat district’s sector D area after Naga gunmen killed three innocent villagers and torched about 50 houses. At least 5,000 villagers fled their houses in the area.
SP (Golaghat) Siladitya Chetia said the situation is under control and there is no report of any fresh incident on Thursday. “Four additional companies of security forces have been deployed and a large number of security personnel are guarding the violence-hit areas to prevent any kind of untoward incident,” he said. He added that ‘a decomposed body with burn injuries was found near Chetiagaon.’
The Golaghat district administration has imposed an indefinite night curfew along the Assam-Nagaland border on Thursday. The order will be effective from 6 pm to 6 am in sectors B and C of the trouble-torn inter-state border.

DC (Golaghat) Juli Sonowal said, “Considering the law and order situation along the border during the past two days, we have passed the order and directed all concerned to implement it strictly."
She said the administration is in touch with Nagaland. “Nagaland has assured us of all possible help to ensure peace on the border,” she added.
On the other hand, the Paresh Baruah-led Ulfa (Independent) asked the Naga miscreants to abstain from such violence. Ulfa (I), in an email statement on Thursday, said such violence will only create a rift in the social bonding between the two neighbouring states.
