Right-hand drive cars get a green light in Estonia

BC, Tallinn, 14.08.2014.Print version
The Estonian Ministry of Internal Affairs approved on Wednesday the regulation, which allows right-hand drive cars to Estonian roads, although traffic experts consider it a dangerous step, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

While the current regulations allow the traffic register to register only vehicles with a steering wheel on the left side, the new regulation annuls this restriction and allows registering right-hand-drive cars too.

A numerous amount of right-hand-drive vehicles are currently brought to Estonia but mainly for spare parts.

Traffic expert Villu Vane thinks that it is not quite safe if a large number of right-hand drive cars ride in our roads. Cars passing each other becomes more dangerous, passengers entering and exiting is more dangerous too, he said.

Vane said that in many countries, use of right-hand-drive cars is restricted by bigger insurance payments.

Allowing right-hand-drive cars to the car registry is caused by a decision of the European Court of Justice.
