A group of 15 racing enthusiasts from the Mechanical Department of Sona College of Technology have won the first place in the SUPRA SAE INDIA 2014, a national level engineering competition held recently.

Organised by the SAE INDIA (Society of Automotive engineers) in association with Maruti Suzuki, the competition presents the under graduate engineering students a platform to design and fabricate a formula type race car. Team Terasvin from the college was among the 150 teams selected for the fabrication process through the virtual round held in KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, but only 85 teams arrived at the race track with the complete car. The team cleared the technical inspection on the first day and the driver had the best time of 3.22 seconds during the ergonomics test, in which the drivers have to exit the vehicle within 5 seconds of removing all the safety harnesses.

Another impressive accomplishment was during the brake test. Terasvin was the only team to clear the brake test in a single attempt. Sona driver slammed the brakes at 58 kmph and stopped the car within 1 meter, a fete achieved by no other team. In the acceleration event, the team grabbed the first prize, covering 75 meters in just 5.49 seconds. The team secured second place in autocross, which tested the agility of the vehicle. The lap was completed in one minute 22 seconds. At a felicitation held at the college, Chairman C. Valliappa, Vice Chairmen Chocko Valliappa, Thyagu Valliappa honored the students with cash awards. Principal Jayaprakash, Academic Director C.V. Koushik and Mechanical Engineering Department Head Venkatesan were also present.
