Aparna Sanjay is on cloud nine as she is among the handful of students chosen from across the country to witness Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s maiden speech live from the Red Fort on Independence Day.

The Kochi girl was selected by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to attend the ‘celebrating excellence on the eve of independence day’ programme.

On the first day of the programme on Wednesday, Aparna, a Class XII student of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan at Girinagar, visited historical sites in Delhi.

“The feeling is yet to sink in. I feel privileged to be part of the students selected under the ‘meritorious students of India’, a joint initiative of the CBSE and the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development,” she told The Hindu from Delhi.

As part of the programme, Aparna will meet Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani and prepare an e-book based on the theme, Hamari Dharohar, Hamara Sapna (Our Heritage, Our Dreams).

The youngster made it to the top, thanks to her curricular and co-curricular achievements.

A winner of the NTSE scholarship in 2011, she had also bagged the Shell National Junior Science Scholar Award 2013 instituted by the British Council and also the Budding Star Award at the MaRRS International Spelling Bee 2011 held in Malaysia.

She was also part of the winning team at the CBSE National Science exhibition in 2013.

As for her future plans, Aparna said that she would like to join the civil services after studies. “Before taking up civil services, I may take up a programme in law,” she said.

But the youngster claimed that her love for law degree is not inspired by her lawyer parents Sanjay. P and Parvathy. “Instead, I am a person who loves to talk a lot,” she said.
