Chemists' body spreads the message of organ donation
NOIDA: Anil Madhok, 51, a chemist in Sector 50, Noida, was thrilled to bits by an unusual happening. Pledging all his organs on Wednesday, he said, "There is no greater joy than saving a person's life by donating organs," Madhok, who runs a chemist shop in Sector 50, said. On the eve of World Organ Donation Day, he pledged to donate all his organs.
"Two years ago, I had decided to donate my eyes. Today I have decided to donate my all organs," he said.
Madhok is a member of the Gautam Budh Nagar district chemists association, which, on Wednesday communicated the message of organ donation to members and non-members, requesting them to register for organ donation. The association said it was getting a good response, with some people having agreed to donate their organs.
Anoop Khanna, president of the association, said that the message has been forwarded to all its 1,500 members. "We are in the profession of health and medicine and we know that a country like ours is always in need of organs. It will be good if people donate their organs when they are dead or brain-dead to save many lives," Khanna said.
The members said that an organ transplant means a second chance at life. The transplant improves quality of life and recipients return to a normal lifestyle.
Madhok said that in our society organ donation did not merely depend on the will of individuals. "It takes a lot of willpower and also consultation of family members," he said. Madhok's mother has pledged to donate her eyes.
According to doctors, vital organs like heart, liver, kidneys, intestines, lungs, and pancreas can be donated only in case of 'brain death'. Other tissues like corneas, heart valves, skin, bones etc., can be donated in case of natural death.
For organ donation, a registry is an essential part of understanding of who and where potential donors are. Once the person is dead, the family members inform the doctors for the donation procedure.
