Road blocked over accident
BHUBANESWAR: Tension ran high on the busy Janpath here on Tuesday a day after an SUV mowed down a pedestrian and injured another. Though police arrested the driver on Monday night, a mob blocked the road in front of Ram Mandir on Tuesday afternoon, demanding compensation.
Movement of vehicles was affected between 2 pm and 3.30 pm on Master Canteen-Vani Vihar route as people squatted on the roads, forcing police to use baton to disperse the mob.
The road blockade was lifted after police announced Rs 10,000 compensation to the kin of the deceased, Bhabagrahi Behera. He and his friend Raja Swain were walking towards the secretariat from Housing Board Square late in the night when the car hit them from behind. Behera died on the spot.
The road blockade triggered chaos on Janpath as police had imposed restriction on movement of vehicles on and around the Mahatma Gandhi Marg (MGM) due to parade rehearsal for Independence Day. Police personnel, who were busy at the parade venue, had to rush to Janpath when the situation worsened. Service roads on both sides of Janpath were choked as police had a trying time regulating traffic.
