Students held a mass demonstration in Chatrapur of Ganjam district of Odisha on Tuesday demanding arrest of culprits involved in alleged gang rape and murder of a minor girl 11 days back.

The victim was from UDSpur village under Ganjam block and was a ClassXI student of Sahid Bhagat Singh Memorial College at Khandadeuli. She went missing on August 2 and her body was located in an agricultural field on August 3. It was alleged that she had been gang raped and murdered.

The students’ demonstration on Tuesday had been organised by Sahid Bhagat Singh College Action Council with support of the SFI and AISF. State secretariat members of the CPI (M) Ali Kishore Patnaik and former CPI MLA N.Narayan Reddy also took part in the demonstration to express their solidarity.

State secretary of the SFI, Sarat Das and AISF State leader Nilakantha Das were also present. Students all colleges of Ganjam block and colleges of Chatrapur town took part in this protest demonstration.

The demonstrators took out a rally which moved around major roads of Chatrapur.

They held a public meeting at Chatrapur bus stand and handed over a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister at the office of the Ganjam collector. Through the memorandum they demanded immediate arrest of culprits behind this gruesome gang-rape and murder of the minor girl as well as Rs. 10 lakh compensation for the family of the victim. The CPI (M) leader Mr. Patnaik alleged that criminal activity has increased many folds in Ganjam and Chatrapur blocks of Ganjam district, the home district of the CM due to patronage of members of ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD).

According to him because of involvement of ruling party elements local police is usually not arresting culprits involved in criminal activities in these areas.
