Amrit Manthan

India is known to be crazy about two things — cricket and cinema. And if you are a fan of the latter, this is your chance to marvel at and even own a few iconic, rare film-themed objects. Auction house, Osian’s will hold a preview exhibit of vintage Indian film memorabilia in Mumbai on August 22.

Titled The Greatest Indian Show on Earth, the auction will take place on September 12, post the opening preview in August. The auction will feature coveted items of the bygone and the present era of Indian cinema with a focus on Prabhat Film Company & Prakash Pictures, one of the great early studios in India; The Kapoors: India’s first film family; Leading heroines and their classic films from 1950s-70s and rare Bengali and classical music cover designs, among other things. A total of 200 items will be on display as part of this collection.

Explaining the need to hold an event of this nature, Neville Tuli, Founder Chairman, Osian’s says, “The fragile nature of paper and the obsession with the present moment is disrespecting our history and the work of previous generations.

Unless the film fraternity, especially the younger generation recognises the responsibility (of preserving), the fact will be that the world’s largest film industry will have the world’s smallest collection of itself in physical and digital terms. Auctions such as The Greatest Indian Show on Earth bring to the surface this critical need.”
