About eight militants were killed and 11 more wounded in a military operation in eastern Afghan province of Wardak overnight, said authorities on Tuesday morning.

"Afghan security forces conducted a night operation and battled the militants in Chak district, killing eight militants, including five Pakistani militants," the provincial government said in a statement.

The foreign militants came from Waziristan in the province with Maidan Shar as its capital, 35 km west of national capital of Kabul, according to the statement.

Three Afghan Taliban local leaders named Mullah Hahad, Mullah Hamdullah and Mullah Muhib were among the dead, the statement noted.

Separately, the security forces also captured a militant namely Amruddin, who tried to plant a roadside bomb along a road in Maidan Shar early Tuesday morning.

Afghan security forces took the full operational lead from foreign troops in mid-last year.

The war-torn country is due to take over the responsibility for its own security from NATO-led troops by the end of year.

Nearly 50,000 NATO-led coalition troops, down from the peak of 130,000 in 2010, are stationed in Afghanistan. Some 32,800 of them are Americans and the United States plans to trim its forces to less than 10,000 next year.
