Floods force thousands to flee

F

loods wreaked havoc in 16 villages in two districts in Banggai regency, Central Sulawesi, on Sunday, forcing 15,000 people to evacuate to safer ground.

'€œThey are now staying in emergency tents set up by the Banggai authorities,'€ Bartholomeus Tandigala, the head of the Central Sulawesi Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), stated on Monday.

The flood-affected districts are Toili and West Toili. Ten villages in Toili and six in West Toili were inundated.

The floodwater, which reached a height of up to 1 meter, was caused by incessant rain in the past few days.

Members of a local search and rescue team with the assistance of military and police personnel are searching for a villager who was swept away by floodwater.

'€œWe hope that the victim is still alive,'€ Tandigala remarked.
