PUNE: The Lonavla rural police on Monday claimed to have solved the murder of a 22-year-old man from Kusgaonwadi near Lonavla after they arrested his mother.
Police have identified the woman as Meerabai Balkrishna Sonawane (55) of Kusgaonwadi. She has been charged with bludgeoning her son Ajay to death with a stone. "We suspect she may have taken the extreme step following a family dispute," said Pradip Kale, assistant inspector of the Lonavla rural police station.
Kale said as per her complaint some unidentified persons killed her son. When the incident took place, Meerabai and Ajay were alone at home. Her elder son had gone to work. Her husband was on a pilgrimage. "She had stated that the suspects had stolen some cash from their house," Kale said
Kale said Meerabai stated that she was fast asleep. "It was raining that day. We had checked the outskirts of their house but did not find any foot prints," he said. Moreover, relatives told police that Meerabai was a light sleeper. "We focused our investigations on her. During sustained interrogation, she admitted that she had killed her son. She also showed us the place, where she had kept the cash," he said.
Meerabai was produced in the court on Monday and remanded in police custody till August 15.
