Two persons sustained serious injuries when they fell down from an escalator at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Shamshabad, on Sunday evening.
Venu Gopal Reddy, whose family members, V. Srinivas Reddy and Vanaja, sustained injuries in the mishap alleged that the airport staff deliberately stopped and reversed the escalator since many people were standing on it. “We were moving up towards the departures section on the escalator when suddenly it started moving in the reverse direction at a high speed. As a result many, including children, lost their balance and fell. After this incident, the airport staff did not even bother to provide first-aid,” he said.
“I, along with a few others, shifted my relatives to Apollo Emergency centre at the airport where they were treated for fractures and abrasion,” he added. When contacted, RGI Airport authorities maintained that there were no major injuries in the incident and efforts were being made to ascertain how the mishap had occurred, whether it was because of “passengers’ confusion or some other reason”.
