‘Let’s free our nation from inequality, poverty’

Quest asked students of Delhi schools the significance of Independence Day.

india_m

‘Sare Jahan se achcha Hindustan hamara”. On this note, I would like to begin my article. First of all, wish you all a very happy Independence Day. On this day, India finally broke free from the clutches of slavery and oppression of the British rule and rose to the dawn of freedom. It is a day to remember the sacrifices made by the martyrs and nationalists who laid down their lives for the sake of our motherland. Indians celebrate the day by displaying the national flag on their attire, accessories, homes and vehicles; by listening to patriotic songs, watching patriotic movies and bonding with family and friends. However, the actual scenario is that for most of the people, this day is nothing more than a holiday, a day to relax and chill with family or friends. On one hand, we claim to be true patriots, who are so much devoted to their country and, on the other hand, we do not even care to pick up our national flag lying on the ground. Patriotism does not mean that we must march up to the border and fight for our country, it means that we must respect our country, respect the national integrity, acknowledge the martyrs for their sacrifices and strive for the betterment of our country and its masses. So, this Independence Day, let us promise ourselves that we will not celebrate this day merely by sitting at home or hoisting the national flag but will follow the message imparted by this day in the true sense.

As we celebrate our Independence Day, I wonder whether we are really free? Evils like human trafficking, corruption, child labour, crimes against women, etc., are a stark reality of our society. Then, are we living up to the dreams of our freedom fighters, who valiantly gave up their lives to protect their motherland and fellow citizens. As we pay homage to our freedom fighters and soldiers on August 15, I wish we could make Rabindranath Tagore’s words “Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high” the reality of our lives and of our country.

this August 15, it will be 67 years since India has been accorded the status of a democratic nation. Truly, India is a marvelous example of how people get united to fight against injustice. The day has immense significance for each civilian and, hence, the day is celebrated with joy and happiness enriched with a sense of patriotism and faith in one’s country. On August 15, the sight of the blue sky filled with multi-coloured kites soaring high together without any distinction should inspire us all to live in harmony and celebrate life.

“I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will.” Words very well spoken by Charlotte Bronte. Nothing can really let anyone be happier than the knowledge that they have the freedom to do anything and do whatever they want. Independence is that very mesmerising word which has resulted in numerous wars. And the fact that Indians have been able to achieve this feat without too much bloodshed, is very commendable. So here’s to 67 years of this country’s independence and to the long, long years of freedom and happiness ahead.

Independence Day in India is commemorated with immense exuberance and joy. It is a significant day for us. The spirit of patriotism dwells in each of our souls, this is the day when we proclaim this honour; for this is the day when we, with incredible contentment and gratification, hoist the Tricolour and sing our national anthem; on this day we take a pledge to defend our freedom with all our might. The euphoria throughout the country is astounding. The foremost function is held at the Red Fort in Delhi, where the Prime Minister hoists the national flag.

The speech delivered by the Prime Minister is one of the most pivotal events amidst the celebrations. The historic day reminds us of several patriots, who gave up their lives to give us freedom and independence, which we enjoy today. Now, we are fearless and independent. We are proud to be Indians. Thus, as patriots, we must zealously proclaim the words of Sir Walter Scott — “Breathes there the man with soul so dead/Who never to himself hath said/This is my own, my native land”. A happy August 15 to all!

Independence is the freedom of the soul, a perception of the mind and a feeling understood by the heart. This freedom, perception and, more importantly, this feeling is that of liberation, patriotism and self-dependence. The meaning of freedom may just be the right to act or speak freely for us. But for the caged bird, it is to fly in the sky, for a leashed dog it is running freely in a field and, for a colonised country, it is to enjoy their basic rights. India was a colony of the British before August 15, 1947, a subjugated country. It was the struggle of our great leaders that brought us independence. August 15 may just be a day for most of us to relax and rejoice, to spend a day out, watch a movie or fly kites. But have we ever taken a moment to think of the reasons why this day is so significant? This day is important because it got us our freedom and independence. But independence is not just about having all our rights, but about all citizens being free and equal. Still, in many parts of our country, there are malpractices and corruption. The day there is an end to all these and there is equality for all citizens, free India will be a completely independent country. Jai Hind.

‘Long live India’, ‘Long live its freedom’… these words cannot be forgotten. These were said by the first Prime Minister of independent India Pt Jawaharlal Nehru on the midnight  of August 15, 1947. The freedom we enjoy today is all because of our freedom fighters, who could not even experience this freedom. It is the most important day in the history of India. But do we realise the importance of this independence? The answer is no. We should respect our national symbols. So, let’s join hands to make India the golden bird. Wish you all a very happy Independence Day.

This year we are celebrating our 67th Independence Day, yet another holiday as most of us might think of it. We waste the day lazing about, going for shopping, movie, malls and every other thing except being a little patriotic towards the country. Being patriotic doesn’t only mean watching marchpasts on television, singing songs, flying tricoloured kites etc. The true meaning of independence is doing something for the betterment of the country, whatever it may be. It could be cleaning in your society, public parks, roads etc. You might be thinking ‘Why this?’ and I would say ‘Why not? You use them, so you should keep them clean. Also, you are independent, you are free to do it. Independence isn’t just a necessity; it comes with responsibilities; the responsibility of making our nation better’. So this Independence Day, do something a little meaningful! Jai Hind.

Every year when we celebrate our liberation from the yoke of subjugation and tyranny by unfurling the national flag at the Red Fort, it also reminds us of the promise we made as citizens of this country to shun parochialism, religious bias and casteism, and to treat all citizens as equals. We, as Indians, should be proud of our country, which is home to people of different religions, ethnic and cultural diversities. Therefore, we must do our utmost to preserve this state in our country by doing our bit and being secular and unbiased towards all.

Independence day is one of the major national events, which is celebrated every year all over the country. India became independent on August 15, 1947, after a long struggle. Pt Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Prime Minister of India and hoisted the Indian flag on the ramparts of the Red Fort. He called the moment “India’s tryst with destiny”. Since then, August 15 is celebrated every year as Independence Day. On this day, every year, the Prime Minister hoists the Tricolour on the ramparts of the Red Fort in the presence of foreign dignitaries, VIPs and common citizens. He gives a speech about the economic developments taking place in the country and, in the end, the national anthem is sung that fills people with pride and patriotism.

We have earned our independence through blood, sweat and tears. Many people laid down their lives to win us freedom. We must remember their sacrifice on this day. We should be humble, honest, sincere, trustworthy towards our work, to ourselves and to our country. Independence is a luxury, we should not misuse it.

Independence, Independence, Independence. Everyone needs independence, birds, animals and human beings, all need independence years ago, we were not free… And were under the British rule, freedom fighters and great leaders of our country lost their lives to make us free. At last at midnight of August 15, 1947, we got independence. Proud to be an Indian.

Vidushi Adhikari,

Every year, we celebrate August 15 as Independence Day. Our freedom fighters fought day and night to drive the British out of our country. But after 67 years of being free, we still have a large population below the poverty line. The poor are getting poorer and the rich are getting richer. Our girl children are not safe in this free land. People do not have safe water to drink. Children have to work when they are supposed to go to school. People die everyday because of wrong medical treatment. Are we actually free… is this truly independence? As the children of tomorrow, should we not fight for a better India? Don’t we have to again start a freedom struggle to lift our fellow countrymen out of poverty, give them education, make our country safer for girls, ensure basic medical hygiene and safe drinking water to all? Can’t we together dream for this?

Priyanshi Mitra,
Amity International School, Saket

As the Tricolour unfurls on the 67th Independence Day, we should feel grateful to all the freedom fighters and leaders, who won us freedom from British rule. We can sense the sacrifice and feel the nobility and prosperity that the flag depicts.
In the nation’s glory lies the individual’s glory, so we all need to awaken our eyes and mind to make the India of our dreams.
