In a shocking incident in what is being seen as a case of ‘honour killing,’ B. Swapna (19), an Intermediate student, was hacked to death by her father, Lingamallu, on Saturday in Ganugugonda village of Tungaturthy mandal in the district.

Inspector of Tungaturthy, K. Parthasarathi, told The Hindu that Swapna and her boy friend Panjarla Praveen Kumar eloped on July 15 and married at Bhadrachalama Temple the next day against the wishes of the girl’s parents.

After getting married, the couple spent about 15 days in Hyderabad and returned to Ganugugonda on August 1. Since then, the couple was staying at Praveen’s home, the Inspector said.

On Saturday morning, the girl’s parents went to Praveen’s house , saying that they had accepted the marriage. Sunday being Raksha Bandhan festival, Lingamallu and his wife Butchamma invited their daughter home, to tie a ‘rakhi’ to her brother. However, she was hacked to death by her father within minutes of reaching home. The accused is at large.

The Inspector said Swapna and Praveen were in love for quite some time, which the girl’s parents opposed strongly as the girl was studying Intermediate, while the boy was an auto driver. They also belonged to two different castes. A case has been registered and investigation is on.
