Second seed S. Soorya overcame a second set blip to defeat top seed S.M. Adithya 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to win the boys’ title in the KTC-ABI Showatech junior tennis tournament here on Saturday.
In a game that lasted a little over two hours, both players played it safe, choosing to prolong the rallies instead of striking first. In the first set, Soorya opened up a 4-2 lead and then broke to love when Adithya was serving at 5-3 to draw first blood.
He then led 2-0 in the second before the top seed clawed his way back. Adithya hit the ball deep, devoid of power, but loaded with top spin, to induce errors from his opponent’s racquet. In addition, double faults at crucial stages — Soorya served two, while being broken at 3-3 — added to the troubles before Soorya lost the set 6-4.
The second set pattern repeated in the third, with Adithya going ahead 2-0 only to find Soorya come back. A decisive break at 4-3 gave the latter the chance to serve out the match, which he did without any further hiccups.
The results:
Final: Boys: S. Soorya bt S.M. Adithya 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Girls: Megha Muthukumaran bt Ashraya Mahesh 6-4, 6-3.
